The Plan and Progress So Far

This project was begun with a planned timeline of three years.  Since then, I’ve decided that a fixed duration is not the way to go with this.  I’ll still set deadlines for myself, but they’re there to motivate me, not to create a sense of race-against-the-clock for my readers.

I can’t wait until you get to Ming Dynasty, so you have to make porcelain! :-)

There is a book out from a few years back that makes the argument that the first photograph ever made was the Shroud of Turin, and that it was created by none other than Da Vinci, of course.

Try making a spear thrower as well. It is super simple, and lets you throw a spear MUCH farther

The simplest one is a straight stick with a notch in the end. Used before the invention of the bow.

    * Woven basket: I have made one from honeysuckle and grape vines. Very easy, lots of fun.
    * Tan a hide: Done this too. Used a roadkilled fox. I’d love to help out.
    * Natural dyes: See if you can get some woad seeds. The plant produces several beautiful colors.
    * Camera obscura: I’ll point you to the first ever photograph. You can probably repeat it.
    * Make a microscope: Water droplet ‘scopes should give you some good first results.

Awesome! Thank you, Tim. Perhaps we should talk about the woven basket…

Oh, and that photograph was already on the list! ;-)

This seems like quite the undertaking, Ian! I wish you a lot of luck with it, and if there is anyway I can help, I’ll be sure to let you know. :)

I saw you were planning to watch news feeds from the Apollo 11. My coworker found a site a couple weeks ago that recreates the mission to the moon and comes complete with most, if not ALL, of the audio from the mission. It’s really cool, and I highly recommend you check it out when you get to that point in your project. http://wechoosethemoon.org/

Good luck with everything, and I hope you’re doing well. :)
