Hey! Very nice page! You will also want to know about Jeff Kalin and http://www.primitivetechnologies.com/. My favorite brick at the Mining Museum is the one that says either Hi or Hello "I am a brick." !!
There is usually a rock swap there around the second weekend of June, so keep your ears open and drop by again ! Also you might like to check out some of the classes at the Institute for American Indian Studies in Washington, CT. They have had the occasional flint knapping and soapstone carving class. www.iaismuseum.org

Ian, you may have already accomplished your goal of the Grokproject, exploring ancient tools and weapons, and prepared yourself for this new one. Astronauts, like everyone else, evolve from something that comes before, so I wish you well and look forward to hearing about your next journey. But this hypoxia stuff ... be safe, my friend.

I did! But I admit I only did it for the sake of demonstration. I normally just leave my shoes tied all the time. ;-)

I'll probably write a follow-up post, since there's certainly more to say, but not until I'm done hiding in the mountains for a week.

Fair enough. I probably would have done the same. I guess the issue is just more subtle that I've described. It seems to have a lot to do with context and how invasive the help or offer of help is.

Cool experiment. :) I've heard some discussion recently around "universal home design" which I think is designing buildings to be helpful to people of all ages and abilities, for example studs universally built at the most proper height and spacing to install hand rails in all rooms, should they some day be needed. Good to be reminded of these things. :) I dug all of this blog except maybe: "As for offering help, I think one generally should not." I can see not going overboard, but I think helping a disabled person can be OK. E.g.: The last time I was at the RMV I helped a disabled woman whom I probably would not have went out of my way for had she seemed fully abled. She walked by me on crutches and dropped her license and paperwork. She stuggled for a few moments to bend over on her crutches, then I picked up her documents for her. She thanked me and gave me a smile. In that situation I don't think she should have to ask someone out of the masses in order to get a helping hand.

I think it'll be OK. The signals I'll need to generate just have to be periodic. It's OK if, for example, my sinusoids are not really sinusoidal. But in any case, I do have a backup plan.
